Permanent Contraception
Permanent Contraception
Also called sterilization or permanent birth control; permanent contraception options are available for patients who are certain they do not want to get pregnant- again or for the first time. Permanent contraception gives women the peace of mind that they will not have an unwanted pregnancy without the ongoing costs and side effects of barrier birth control methods like condoms, or hormonal contraceptives.
Permanent Birth Control for Women
The most well-known sterilization technique for women is tubal ligation, a surgical procedure where surgeons cut, band, or coagulate the Fallopian tubes so that sperm and eggs are not able to come together. Tubal sterilization can be performed at the time of cesarean section or at any time laparoscopically
Essure Permanent Contraception
A newer, non-surgical option for women is Essure hysteroscopic sterilization. Instead of making abdominal incisions and cutting or burning the tubes, trained physicians introduce small inserts through the cervix and into the Fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes grow into the inserts, forming a permanent blockage in the tubes. This is usually performed in the office without any incisions.
Permanent Birth Control for Men
Sterilization surgery for men is known as a vasectomy. Doctors are able to cut and tie off the vas deferens (the tubes that transport sperm to the semen). This is more invasive than the Essure procedure for women. | |
