Robotic Surgery

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous (benign) tumors of the uterus that develop in approximately one-fourth of all women. Fibroids can develop beneath the lining of the uterus, within the uterine walls, and even on the outside of the uterus. In many cases, uterine tumors produce no symptoms, but in some cases fibroids lead to menorrhagia (excessive bleeding during menstruation), uterine bleeding, abnormal periods, pain or discomfort, frequent urination, and/or infertility.

Tumors, or fibroids, of the uterus can be treated with surgery. In some cases, Dr. Webb will remove the entire uterus using a surgery called a hysterectomy. While an extremely effective procedure, a hysterectomy may not be indicated for all women with fibroids.
Women who do not wish to preserve their fertility, yet do not want a hysterectomy can go on a regimen of prescription drugs that can halt fibroid growth and/or shrink the tumors.

For those who plan to become pregnant, an alternative to hysterectomy called myomectomy is available. This uterine-preserving surgery removes only the fibroids while sparing the uterus.

With da Vinci, small incisions are used to introduce miniaturized wristed instruments and a high-definition 3D camera. Seated comfortably at the da Vinci console, your surgeon views a magnified, high-resolution 3D image of the surgical site.

At the same time, state-of-the-art robotic and computer technologies scale, filter and seamlessly translate Dr. Webb’ hand movements into precise micro-movements of the da Vinci instruments.

The System cannot be programmed, nor can it make decisions on its own. Rather, the da Vinci System requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from Dr. Webb.
